Gawker Media Hack: My Experience

If you’re not already aware, Gakwer Media’s database of user accounts has been compromised by a group called Gnosis.

They have already reported about it on their own websites, however…

I can speak on this subject with first hand experience, as my password was one of the 1.3 million that were leaked by Gnosis in the Gawker Media server/database breach. It’s now available as part of a torrent file that’s been posted and distributed on countless trackers already.

And there I am… Shit. Thankfully that’s an encrypted password hash, and not my plain password, but it also gives my email to COUNTLESS spammers.

Before Gawker even announced that this happened, my Battle.net password had already had a crack taken at it. They sent password reset emails to me a few times, luckily I have an authenticator on my account. My LinkedIn account was also disabled for security reasons and when I went to log into Twitter the next morning I no longer had access.

It was clear to me that, although my password was encrypted in the Gnosis dump, it was already decrypted by at least one individual and he was attacking my accounts. I luckily have more secure passwords already for my email account or else all hope would have been lost. I was able to get into all my accounts and reset/change the passwords.

This has been a huge lesson to me, I wont be using the same password on multiple sites anymore.

If you’re concerned you might have been affected, please check http://www.didigetgawkered.com/ and type in your email account(s). It will tell you if you’re one of the 1.3 million affected or not.

  1. If Bill Gates had a penny for every time I had to reboot my computer…oh wait, he does. I wonder if Mr. Gates ever gets frustrated.. It is frustrating to just keep trying the same thing over and over with little results. Then you try even harder and still… nothing. That’s when you know it is probably time to try a different approach. By now, just about everyone who runs a website understands that you need LOTS of links to your sites from LOTS of SOURCES, over time, with the bulk coming from lower tier sites and some from higher PR authority sites. This new tool allows you to do that and also spread your links out over time. You can schedule all of your link building campaigns for a whole year (or more) if you want to, and then just move on to something else. It will then, on schedule, post to blogs platforms, bookmarking sites, link wheels, web 2.0 sites, social sites, article directories, press releases, rss feeds and directories, forums with profiles and blog networks. It is really an internet marketers dream. Go ahead and have a look for yourself… http://tinyurl.com/7h4ats2
